    Along the upper edge of the coin from left to right is the inscription '500TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIFIED RUSSIAN STATE'. In the center is a panorama of the Petropavlovsk Fortress, below it the mouth of the Neva River, to the right a ship of the line, to the left a galley. At the bottom along the rim are the words 'PETROPAVLOVSKAYA FORTRESS' and the year of construction '1703', separated by a dot.

    In the upper part of the coin is the State Emblem of the USSR, encircled by a ribbon (15 turns), below it the letters 'USSR'. Below, to the left and right, is a line. Under the line on the left are the chemical symbol 'Ag' and the fineness '900' of the coin's metal, below them the pure weight of the precious metal '31.1'. Under the line on the right is the manufacturer's (mint) mark 'LMD'. Slightly below is the denomination: the numeral '3' and below it the word 'RUBLYA'. At the lower edge is the year of mintage '1990'.
