Below, in English, is the name of the Caribbean island Hispaniola — "HISPANIOLA". In the central part — Columbus plants a flag on symbolic land depicted as the outline of the island of Hispaniola. To the right — a large numeral 20. The letter "R" beneath the flag is the mintmark of the Rome Mint, Italy.

    Along the edge of the coin is the inscription in Italian "REPVBBLICA DI SAN MARINO", translated as "REPUBLIC OF SAN MARINO". Along the inner circumference is the Latin inscription "LIBERTAS PERPETUA" — "FREEDOM FOREVER". In the central part is an image of three towers with feather-like patterns at the top. The letters "L. Cretara" are the engraver's mark of Laura Cretara.
