The central part features a portrait of the Mexican poet, writer, and essayist Octavio Paz. To the right is his quote: "Todo es presencia, todos los siglos son este presente". Translated from Spanish: "Everything is presence, all centuries are this present". Along the upper edge arc are the dollar sign "$" and the number "20". Below is the inscription in Spanish: "AÑO 2000" - "YEAR 2000". The coin's rim features decorative elements in the form of dentils.
Obverse
The central part depicts the coat of arms of Mexico: an eagle perched on a cactus, devouring a snake. Along the upper edge arc is the text in Spanish: "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS", which translates to "UNITED MEXICAN STATES". Along the lower edge arc are oak and laurel leaves, tied together with a ribbon.
