In the central part is St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral, with people praying before it. Below is the stamped text in Ukrainian: «XII ст.», meaning: «12th century». Around the edge of the coin is its name in Ukrainian: «МИХАЙЛIВСКИЙ ЗОЛОТОВЕРХИЙ СОБОР» (St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral).
Obverse
In the central part is a stylized image of a Christian cross framed by an ornament executed in national traditions. In the center of the cross is a three-line inscription in Ukrainian: «УКРАЇНА» – the country name and «5 ГРИВЕНЬ» – 5 hryvnias. Above the inscription is the Coat of Arms of Ukraine, below it is the year of mintage 1998.
