In the central part, framed by a decorative pattern of leaves, berries, and geometric shapes, there is a five-line inscription in Ukrainian: «20 РОКIВ НЕЗАЛЕЖНОСТИ УКРАЇНИ 24 серпня 1991 р.», which translates to: «20 Years of Independence of Ukraine. August 24, 1991».
Obverse
In the central part, surrounded by a rhombus ornament, is the coat of arms of Ukraine. Below the coat of arms is the mint mark of the Kyiv Mint. Around it, within a smaller diameter circle, four rushnyky (embroidered towels) are depicted in the form of a cross. Between them, with their names indicated in Ukrainian, are portraits of Yaroslav the Wise (ЯРОСЛАВ МУДРИЙ), Bohdan Khmelnytsky (БОГДАН ХМЕЛЬНИЦКИЙ), Taras Shevchenko (ТАРАС ШЕВЧЕНКО), and Mykhailo Hrushevsky (МИХАЙЛО ГРУШЕВСЬКИЙ). Along the upper edge of the coin, from left to right, runs the Ukrainian text: «НАЦIОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ», which translates to: «National Bank of Ukraine». Along the lower edge of the coin is the Ukrainian inscription: «П'ЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ» - 5 Hryvnias.
