    In the central part, a four-line inscription: 'MACU…', below a countermark from the period 1809-1837, surrounded by five four-petaled flowers of two types (two and three in number). All of this is enclosed within a circle of dots. To the right, bottom, and left is an inscription in Portuguese: 'AFRICA. PORTUGUEZA', translated as 'Portuguese Africa'. At the top along the rim is the mint year 1789, separated from the inscription by two four-petaled flowers with dots on the sides. The edge of the coin features decorative raised teeth.

    In the central part, the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal. To the right, bottom, and left along the edge is text in Latin: 'MARIA.I.D.G.REGINA.PORT.ET D.GUINEÆ', the titles of Queen Maria I of Portugal. The edge of the coin features decorative raised teeth.
