Reverse In the central part, an inscription in four lines: 'MACU…', below it a countermark from the period 1809-1837, all surrounded by five four-petaled flowers of two types (two and three in quantity) and enclosed within a circle of dots. To the right, bottom, and left is an inscription in Portuguese: 'AFRICA.PORTUGUEZA', translating to 'Portuguese Africa'. At the top along the rim is the mint year 1763, separated from the inscription by two four-petaled flowers with dots on the sides.
Obverse In the central part, the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal. To the right, bottom, and left along the edge is a text in Latin: 'IOSEPHUS.I.D.G.REX.P.ET.D.GUIN', the title of King of Portugal Joseph I the Reformer.
