In the central part, a large numeral 5 on the left. On the right, at the top, a two-line inscription in English 'EURO / CENT', translating to 'five euro cents'. Below the inscription, a symbolic depiction of the globe with the outlines of Europe against a background of six slanted parallel lines, with 12 stars at their ends. Near the rim on the right is the engraver's mark of Luc Luycx 'LL'.
Obverse
Along the rim are 12 five-pointed stars, symbolizing the Eurozone countries. On the left, the name of the issuing country in Italian 'CITTA' DEL VATICANO' – 'Vatican City'. On the right, the year of mintage 2014 and the letter 'R' – the mintmark of the Mint of Rome. In the central part, a portrait of Pope Francis I facing left and inscriptions in Italian: 'ELF INC' – the personal mark of engraver Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini and the signature of the artist Gabriela Titotto 'G. TITOTTO'.
