In the central part, a large numeral 5 on the left; on the right, a two-line inscription in English 'EURO / CENT', meaning 'five euro cents'. Below the inscription is a symbolic depiction of the globe with the outlines of Europe against a background of six slanted parallel lines, with 12 stars at their ends. Near the rim on the right is the engraver Luc Luycx's initials 'LL'.
Obverse
Along the edge of the coin, 12 stars of the European Union are evenly distributed. The central part features the lesser coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia: a heraldic shield divided into three parts: a rising sun at the top, a lion with its tongue out at the bottom left, and a griffin at the bottom right. Three five-pointed stars are arranged in a semicircle above the shield. Below the coat of arms is the issuing country's name 'LATVIJA' in Latvian, with the mint year '2014' vertically on the left.
