In the central part, a large numeral 1 on the left; on the right at the top, a two-line inscription in English 'EURO / CENT', meaning 'one euro cent'. Below the inscription, a symbolic depiction of the globe with the outlines of Europe against a background of six slanted parallel lines, with 12 stars at their ends. Near the rim on the right – the engraver's mark of Luc Luycx 'LL'.
Obverse
Along the rim are 12 five-pointed stars, symbolizing the Eurozone countries. On the left, the name of the issuing country in Italian 'CITTA' DEL VATICANO' – 'Vatican City'. On the right, the year of minting 2014 and the letter 'R' – the mintmark of the Rome Mint. In the central part, a portrait of Pope Francis I facing left and inscriptions in Italian: 'ELF INC' – the personal mark of engraver Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini and the signature of the artist Gabriela Titotto 'G. TITOTTO'.
