Around the edge of the coin, the text: on the right and left, the name of the state South Africa in Afrikaans and English: 'SUID-AFRIKA. SOUTH AFRICA'; at the top, separated by triangles, the mint year 1928; at the bottom, separated by two four-pointed stars, the inscription: '1/4 PENNY'. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
