In the central part, within a smaller circle, two sparrows facing each other are depicted, sitting on a branch of a thorny plant; below the branch is the monogram 'KG' - the mark of engraver George Edward Kruger-Gray. Around the edge of the coin, the text: on the right and left, the name of the state South Africa in Afrikaans and English: 'SUID-AFRIKA. SOUTH AFRICA'; at the top, separated by triangles, the mint year 1928; at the bottom, separated by two four-pointed stars, the inscription: '1/4 PENNY'. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.

In the central part, a chest-facing profile portrait of King George V, turned to the left. Around the edge of the coin, the inscription: 'GEORGIVS V REX IMPERATOR' in English, which translates to: 'George V King and Emperor'. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
