In the central part, an old two-masted sailing ship is depicted sailing away. To the left of the ship is the 'RRC' monogram of engraver Robert-Ralph Carmichael. To the right is a depiction of a fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the French monarchy. Below, in two lines, are the dates 1604-2004 and an image of the first French settlement in Acadia (North America). Along the arc of the right edge is the inscription: 'CANADA DOLLAR' - the country name Canada in English and 1 dollar.
  • Obverse
To the left and right along the edge is the text 'ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA'. Translation: 'Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen'. In the center is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (the so-called fourth type), facing right. On the Queen's right shoulder is the monogram of the portrait's author.
