In the central part, a large numeral 5 on the left. On the right, at the top, a two-line inscription in English 'EURO / CENT', meaning 'five euro cents'. Below the inscription, a symbolic depiction of the globe with the outlines of Europe against a background of six slanted parallel lines, with 12 stars at their ends. Near the rim on the right is the engraver Luc Luycx's initials 'LL'.
Obverse
Twelve stars of the European Union are evenly spaced along the rim. In the central part, an image of a modern sea tanker. Above it, at the top, the inscription in Greek '5 ΛΕΠΤΑ', meaning 'five euro cents', and below it the year of issue '2002'. To the left, below the tanker, is the mintmark of the Athens Mint (acanthus leaf).
