Reverse
In the central part, a large numeral 1 on the left. On the right, at the top, a two-line inscription in English 'EURO / CENT', meaning 'one euro cent'. Below the inscription, a symbolic depiction of the globe with the outlines of Europe against a background of six slanted parallel lines, with 12 stars at their ends. Near the rim on the right is the engraver's mark of Luc Luycx, 'LL'.
Obverse
In the central part, an image of a ship, an ancient Athenian trireme. Above, to the left of the ship, the year of minting '2002', below it the mintmark of the Athens Mint (acanthus leaf). To the right of the oars are the initials of the artist Georgios Stamatopoulos — 'ΓΣ'. Below, an inscription in Greek '1 ΛΕΠΤΟ', meaning 'one euro cent'. Along the rim, 12 stars of the European Union are evenly distributed.
