The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs is thelargestmunicipal funder of arts initiatives in the country, supporting institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Museum, the Queens Museum, and the New York Botanical Garden. This year’s allotment represents an increase of$24.2 millionfrom 2026, the previous record high given to the Department of Cultural Affairs budget. The allotment is also $107 million more than the City Council’s Preliminary FinancialPlanfrom March, which appropriated $215.94 million to the city agency.

In addition to a funding increase, the Fiscal year 2027 budget establishes a “Cultural Stability Fund” to be run by the Department of Cultural Affairs, which will distribute $10 million annually over the next three fiscal year periods “to assist eligible organizations experiencing unexpected or emergency circumstances.”

In a statement to Hyperallergic, Mamdani said that “artists and cultural institutions are the beating heart of New York City. … But a crushing affordability crisis has threatened to drive out the very artists who have long defined life in this city.” He added that this investment in the city’s arts and cultural organizations signifies his administration’s belief that “the people who make this city what it is should be able to build their lives here.”
