TheBergen Assembly, a triennially occurring platform for art in Bergen, Norway that was conceived as an alternative to the biennial format, has just announced the “convenors” of its 2028 edition: frequent collaboratorsLucia Pietroiustiand Filipa Ramos. Since 2018, Pietroiusti and Ramos have worked together on their long-term, interdisciplinary festival and research project “The Shape of a Circle in the Mind of a Fish,” which invites experts from many different disciplines to participate in an open-ended inquiry into consciousness and intelligence.
For the sixth edition of the Bergen Assembly, Pietroiusti and Ramos will conduct part of their research in public; they’ll also work closely with the city of Bergen for research and public programming. “Their approach is grounded in building connections between disciplines and practices, and in opening spaces where different forms of knowledge and experience can meet,” the organization said.
Pietroiusti is the curator of the Sixth Autostrada Biennale in Kosovo, set to take place in 2027, and founder of Serpentine Gallery’s General Ecology initiative. Ramos teaches at the Art Institute at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel and is curator of the 2027 edition of the Lofoten International Art Festival. Her most recent book, The Artist as Ecologist, came out in 2025.
The announcement on the Bergen Assembly website is interspersed with poetic phrases, suggesting imagery that is inspiring the curators: “Gardens and winds to tickle them. Feelings and stomachs to feel them. Stories and songs to remember them. Spirits and their animals. Whispers and other transmissions. Clouds and churches made of them. Human and Bird-made maps.”
Past editions of the Bergen Assembly have similarly used imaginative inspirations to shape the event, such as the question of how to cultivate neighborliness from afar; a fictional character on a quest to find a seven-sided solid body; and an examination into “how to redefine our alliances with those who are not presently living.”
Events related to the edition will begin on September 12 of this year: Pietroiusti and Ramos will host a “Prelude” gathering in Bergen revolving around the themes of technology and ecstasy.
