Hong Kong’s M+ And Centre Pompidou Announce Strategic Partnership

Opened less than five years ago,M+, Hong Kong’s museum of modern and contemporary art, has just announced a multi-year partnership with theCentre Pompidouin Paris, which houses the largest modern art museum in Europe. The Pompidou, which has been closed since last year to undergo renovations that will be completed around 2030, will inaugurate the renovated space with an exhibition of works from the collections of both museums; a presentation of that show at M+ will follow.

In the meantime, several co-organized exhibitions will be presented at M+ starting in 2027, the two museums said in a statement. The collaboration between museums also comes with a four-year postdoctoral fellowship funded by the Huo Family Foundation, which was funded by prominent arts philanthropist Yan Huo in 2009. The Huo Research Fellow will contribute to the research and writing of exhibitions developed through the partnership, focusing on twentieth- and twenty-first-century Western and Asian art.

“Centre Pompidou was one of the key institutions that we looked to that helped us guide the principles around building an institution like this for Asia,” Suhanya Raffel, the director of M+, told the South China Morning Post. “It is remarkable for us to be able to say, ‘yes, we are now working with a museum mentor for M+, but as also, I hope, an equal partner.’”

“With the renovation of our Paris building Centre Pompidou has begun a true metamorphosis, where international partnerships play a key role in helping to reach new audiences, enrich our collection, and advance curatorial research,” Laurent Le Bon, Centre Pompidou’s director, said in a statement. “We are proud to announce this ambitious collaboration with M+, which will benefit both the Asian and European publics, particularly young people, through programmes on both continents, all while advancing intercultural dialogue for years to come.”
