Artists Announced for 60th Venice Biennale

The organizers of the Venice Biennale have revealed the names of the 331 artists who will be participating in the main exhibition of the event’s sixtieth iteration, slated to take place April 20–November 24. Titled “Stranieri Ovunque” (Foreigners Everywhere), the exhibition is being curated by Adriano Pedrosa, artistic director of Museu de Arte de São Paulo and the first curator of the event to be based in Latin America. The artist roster, which is larger than the last edition’s by roughly a third, reflects Pedrosa’s intention for the Biennale to investigate the idea of living on the margins, whether as an outsider, a new arrival, or an Indigenous person. Speaking at a January 31 press conference, Pedrosa noted that a large number of the exhibiting artists are Indigenous or from the Global South; a significant cohort identify as queer.RelatedDMITRY RYBOLOVLEV LOSES FRAUD CASE AGAINST SOTHEBY’SLAURIE ANDERSON WITHDRAWS FROM GERMAN UNIVERSITY PROFESSORSHIP AFTER PRO-PALESTINE LETTER RESURFACES “Foreigners Everywhere” will be divided into two sections, “Nucleo Contemporaneo” (Contemporary Nucleus) and “Nucleo Storico” (Historical Nucleus). “Contemporary Nucleus” will feature work by queer, outsider, and Indigenous artists, as well as a segment inspired by curator Marco Scortini’s video projectDisobedience Archive, 2005–, which explores the relationship between artistic practice and political action. One portion of the segment will feature film and video focusing on diasporic activism, while another will feature works examining gender disobedience. “Historical Nucleus” will center the comparatively unknown modernist movements arising in twentieth-century Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

One portion of this section will be devoted to portraiture, while the other will center artists who are part of Italy’s first- or second-generation diaspora. “I myself feel very implicated in many of these themes, concepts, motifs, and frameworks in the exhibition,” said Pedrosa. “I have lived abroad and have been fortunate to travel extensively during my lifetime. Yet, often I have also experienced the treatment reserved to a third-world foreigner as I am, although never a refugee and, in fact, holding one of the highest-ranking passports from the Global South.” Also of note, during the press conference at which Pedroso spoke, outgoing Biennale president Roberto Cicutto passed the reins to the incoming president, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, a right-wing journalist nominated by Italian culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano, himself installed by far-right Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni.
