Whitney Biennial Announces Artists for 2024 Edition

The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, on January 24 revealed the sixty-nine artists and two collectives slated to participate in the 2024 Whitney Biennial, opening March 20. Titled “Even Better Than the Real Thing,” this year’s iteration of the Biennial is curated by Chrissie Iles, who organized the 2004 and 2006 editions of the event, and Meg Onli. Creating an exhibition within this landscape meant that “the show had to be politically charged.” Though the biennial survey has historically focused mainly on American artists, this year about 28 percent of the cohort hails from outside the US.

“Society is at an inflection point . . . in part brought on by artificial intelligence challenging what we consider to be real, as well as critical discussions about identity,” said the curators in a joint statement.

“Many of the artists presenting works—including via robust performance and film programs—explore the fluidity of identity and form, historical and current land stewardship, and concepts of embodiment, among other urgent throughlines, and we are inspired by the work they are creating and sharing.” A full list of participating artists and collectives is below.
