

(1782 London – 1875 ibid.) attributed; Portrait of a dignified old gentleman, beautifully painted, expressive, characteristic, realistic portrait of a gentleman seated in an armchair. Likely a depiction of the renowned English engineer and principal founder of the railway system, George Stephenson (1781-1848), whom Pickersgill also portrayed around 1845. Pickersgill is one of the most significant portraitists of his time, with the most notable personalities sitting for him as models.
