"Portrait of Daughter Marion with a Hood: Art and Relationships in Munich"

Franz von Lenbach

Description

(1836 Schrobenhausen - 1904 Munich). Portrait of his daughter Marion with a hood. The portrait depicts his beloved daughter Marion (1892 - 1947) in her childhood years. Lenbach, who was an extremely proud and enthusiastic father, created a large series of paintings of his daughter Marion, whom he often portrayed with her angelic, blond hair, both alone and together with him. When Franz and Magdalena Lenbach amicably separated in 1896, Marion stayed with her father, so she remained the painter’s favorite subject. Stylistically, Lenbach focused on the head, outlining it with sketches and adding individual touches, while everything else was treated only fleetingly to enhance the intensity of the expression. The artist, who was trained at the Munich Academy, became a sought-after portraitist of the nobility, bourgeoisie, and prominent figures in politics, society, science, and culture since 1868. Thanks to his outstanding social status and lifestyle, he became a true prince of painting in Munich. Oil, cardboard. Signed or inscribed on the reverse. 42.5 cm x 32.5 cm. In a frame.
