(1853, Chellardike, Scotland – 1926, London) A young woman stands in a morning red robe, painted with loose brushstrokes, a sketch for a larger painting. Fowler studied at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and the South Kensington Schools in London. After this, he moved to Liverpool, where he established his studio, which served as his base for several decades. He exhibited his works not only in Liverpool, but also in London, Paris, and Munich. At the beginning of the 20th century, he returned to London. His style was classical, often incorporating mythological themes, but also combining strong elements of Symbolism and Japonism. Among the artists who influenced Fowler were Frederic Leighton, Albert Moore, George Watts, James Whistler, Frederick Walker, and David Woodlock.
