The glass-bronze sculpture "Maternité", created and published by the Daum glassworks in Nancy, reflects the close collaboration between the artist and the factory, which began in the mid-1960s and lasted almost 20 years. Dali discovered that the transparent properties of glass, especially the soft or flowing molten colored glass of Pâte de Verre, were the perfect medium for his surrealist expression of metamorphosis. In total, he created 21 models for execution at Daum, mainly in editions of only 150-220 pieces, making him one of the most creative and significant artists ever to collaborate with the glassworks. The purple glass-bronze sculpture Pâte de Verre (Pâte de Cristal), 1978, is signed (or inscribed) "Dali", marked "DAUM FRANCE" and numbered "54/200". It is inscribed and titled by the publisher and manufacturer Daum Nancy, France, on the original wooden base.
