Also known as Gazi Osman Pasha. He was an Ottoman field marshal and a hero of the Siege of Plevna in 1877. Despite the failure to defend the city, he was awarded the title of Gazi ("warrior" or "veteran") for his bravery in holding the city for five months against the superior Russo-Romanian forces. In addition to the title of his Aide-de-camp, Osman received the Order of the Medjidie and the Imtiyaz Medal for his services to the Empire. Osman gained fame for his achievements, and the Plevna March was dedicated to him.
