Portrait of Matilda of Flanders. The inscription 'REINE MATHILDE' is engraved to the left and right. The years of her life, '1031-1083', are indicated at the bottom.
  • Obverse
William the Conqueror during the Battle of Hastings (October 14, 1066), when the Norman duke's troops defeated the Anglo-Saxon army of King Harold. The image of William is taken from the famous Bayeux Tapestry (long thought to have been created with Matilda's involvement, hence it is also called the 'Tapestry of Queen Matilda'). The coin shows the scene where William removed his helmet to prove to his soldiers that he was not dead. At the top is Halley's Comet, observed in 1066. At the bottom are the denomination, the year of minting '2016', and the letters 'RF' (République française – 'French Republic').
