In the central part, two vultures sit on a tree; to their left, within a dotted oval, is a right-facing portrait of Alexander von Humboldt. In the upper and right parts of the coin, along the rim, is his name in Spanish: «ALEJANDRO DE HUMBOLDT», with the years 1769-1989 below in a semicircle. Under the tree branch on the left is the year of issue 1989; under the branch on the right is the mintmark of the Havana mint. The coin's edge features decorative elements in the form of dots.
Obverse
In the central part is the coat of arms of the Republic of Cuba. Above it, an inscription in Spanish: «REPUBLICA DE CUBA», meaning 'Republic of Cuba'. In the lower part, following the curve of the coin's edge, is the inscription in Spanish: «1 PESO» - 1 peso.
