In the central part, an antique map of the Caribbean with a dotted line depicting the sailing route of a ship. In the lower left part of the map, an image of a compass. To the left of it, the year of issue 1990 and the mintmark of the Havana mint. In the upper part, along the rim, text in Spanish: «PRIMER VIAJE DE COLON», translated as «First Voyage of Columbus», below the inscription the year 1492. Along the lower rim, an inscription in Spanish: «V CENTENARIO», translated as «5th Centenary».

In the central part, the coat of arms of the Republic of Cuba. Above, an inscription in Spanish: «REPUBLICA DE CUBA», translated as «Republic of Cuba». In the lower part, along the rim, an inscription in Spanish: «1 PESO» - 1 peso. To the left and right of the coat of arms, along the edge, are two five-pointed stars.
