The central part features the right-facing profile of Pedro II. Below the neck truncation are the letters: "E.S.C.R." - denoting the initials of the engraver, Ernesto de Souza Reis Carvalho. To the left and right along the edge is text in Latin: "PETRUS II D.G.C.IMP. ET PERP.BRAS.DEF" - "PEDRO II BY THE GRACE OF GOD CONSTITUTIONAL EMPEROR AND PERPETUAL DEFENDER OF BRAZIL", below - the year of minting: "1875". Decorative raised denticles are arranged along the rim.
