    Along the upper edge from left to right is the country name in English 'NEW . ZEALAND'. Below is the inscription 'SIXPENCE', meaning 'six pence', and the year of issue '1965'. The central part of the reverse features a relief image of a huia bird with folded wings on a branch. Below it is the engraver's mark of George Edward Kruger-Gray 'K.G'.

    In the upper part, following the curve of the coin's edge under a dotted border, is the inscription 'QEEN . ELIZABETH .THE . SECOND', which translates from English as 'Queen Elizabeth the Second'. The beginning and end of the inscription are separated by a cross. The central part features a right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a laurel wreath.
