Reverse In the central part, an ornately executed number 10 is framed by olive branches, tied at the bottom with a ribbon in the form of a bow and flowers. The minting year '1901' is along the arc of the lower edge. The coin's edge features denticulated elements.
Obverse In the center is a stylized coat of arms of Portugal: a heraldic shield topped with a crown; the edge of the shield has a border on which seven castles are placed; in the center, arranged in the shape of a cross, are five small shields, each bearing five bezants. To the left and right along the denticulated rim is an inscription in Portuguese: 'CARLOS I REI DE PORTUGAL' (Carlos I King of Portugal).
