In the central part - 20 reis in 2 lines: "20 RÉIS" on a background of horizontal dashed lines. Along the upper edge of the coin, an inscription in Portuguese: "VINTEM POUPADO, VINTEM GANHO" - "Twenty saved, twenty earned". Decorative raised denticles are placed along the rim.
Obverse
Along the upper edge of the coin from left to right runs the text in Portuguese: "REPÚBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL" - "Republic of the United States of Brazil". In the central part is the country's coat of arms - a five-pointed star, with a coffee branch to its left and a tobacco branch to its right. Below - the year of minting: "1889". Decorative raised denticles are placed along the rim.
