Below the inscription, a symbolic depiction of the globe with the outlines of Europe against a background of six slanted parallel lines, with 12 stars at their ends. Near the rim on the right is the engraver's mark 'LL' for Luc Luycx.

    Left and right near the rim are 12 five-pointed stars, symbolizing the Eurozone countries. At the top, the issuing country's name in Italian 'CITTA' DEL VATICANO' – 'Vatican City'. At the bottom, the issue date 2004 and the letter 'R' – the mintmark of the Rome Mint. In the central part, a left-facing portrait of Pope John Paul II. Below the image, the abbreviation 'GV.UP Inc' – the engraver's mark for Guido Veroi.
