    In the central part, a large numeral 1 on the left. On the right, a two-line inscription in English 'EURO / CENT', meaning 'one euro cent'. Below the inscription, a symbolic depiction of the globe with the outlines of Europe against a background of six slanted parallel lines, with 12 stars at their ends. Near the rim on the right is the engraver's mark of Luc Luycx 'LL'.

    In the upper part, along the curve of the coin's edge, are 12 five-pointed stars symbolizing the Eurozone countries. Below, the name of the issuing country in Italian 'CITTA' DEL VATICANO' – 'Vatican City'. In the central part is the coat of arms of the Apostolic Camerlengo – the symbol of the Holy See during the interregnum. Above the emblem, the Latin inscription 'SEDE VACANTE MMV' – 'Sede Vacante 2005'. Below the coat of arms are inscriptions in Italian: 'M.A.K. INC' – the personal mark of engraver Maria Angela Cassol and the signature of the artist Daniela Longo 'D.LONGO'.
