    In the upper part, along the rim's curve, the French text: "COTE FRANÇAISE DES SOMALIS" - "FRENCH SOMALILAND". Below is a raised ornament of rhombuses and dots. In the central part is the head of an antelope, with 20 ostrich feathers between its horns. To its right is the numeral 5, and to its left the letter designation for franc - "FRS". Along the left and right rim curves are images of two fish facing opposite directions from each other.

    In the central part, the left-facing profile of Marianne – a young woman wearing a Phrygian cap, against a background of a fleet of 4 ships. To the left and right along the rim is the French text: «REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE UNION FRANÇAISE», which translates to "FRENCH REPUBLIC FRENCH UNION". Below is the year of mintage, 1948. To the left of Marianne's portrait is the inscription: "L.Bazor", denoting the artist's initials: Lucien Georges Bazor.
