    In the central part, two sparrows are perched on a plant branch, facing in opposite directions. Above the branch is the monogram 'TS.', the mark of engraver Thomas Sasseen. Above the birds is the inscription: '1/2' - ½ cent.

    In the central part is the coat of arms of South Africa from 1961-2000. Below the coat of arms is the monogram 'T.S.', the mark of engraver Thomas Sasseen. Around the edge of the coin are inscriptions: on the right and left, the name of the state South Africa in Afrikaans and English: 'SUID-AFRIKA. SOUTH AFRICA'; at the bottom, the mint year 1973. The inscriptions are separated by three decorative elements.
