Reverse
Within a toothed border, the numeral '2.5' is at the upper left, with the Portuguese inscription 'METICAlS' (meaning '2.5 meticais') below. The central part of the reverse features a relief design of a port crane and an ocean freighter being loaded.
Obverse
Along the upper rim is the Portuguese text 'República Popular de Moçambique' — 'People's Republic of Mozambique'. The year of mintage, 1985, is at the bottom. The central part depicts the national coat of arms: a crossed hoe and Kalashnikov rifle and an open book, superimposed on a cogwheel and rising sun, all framed by a wreath of corn and sugarcane bound twice with a ribbon. The composition is crowned by a five-pointed star.
