    In the central part, a large numeral 2 on the left, with the English inscription 'EURO' to its right, translating to '2 Euro'. Below the letter 'O' is the engraver's mark of Luc Luycx 'LL'. The inscription is placed over the outlines of a map of Europe. Six vertical parallel lines extend upwards and downwards from it, with 12 stars at their ends.
  • Obverse
    Along the rim on the outer ring, the letter 'R' at the top – the mint mark of the Rome Mint – with the year of issue '2005' below it. Six European Union stars are evenly placed to the left and right. At the bottom is the name of the issuing state, Vatican City, in Italian: 'CITTA' DEL VATICANO'. Along the edge of the inner disc, the inscription on the left reads 'XX GIORNATA MONDIALE', and on the right 'DELLA GIOVENTÙ', translating from Italian as 'XX WORLD YOUTH DAY'. The central part depicts Cologne Cathedral with a comet above it. At the bottom, along the edge of the disc on either side of the cathedral, are the artist's mark of Daniela Longo 'LONGO' on the left and the engraver's mark of Ettore Lorenzo Frapicci 'E.L.F. INC.' on the right.
