On the left, between the rim and a dotted border, are the engravers' names 'ISABEL.C - F. BRANCO' — 'Isabel Carriço - Fernando Branco'. On the right is the abbreviation 'INCM' — the mintmark of the Lisbon Mint. At the top is an image of a 5-petaled rose. The central part features a composition including a four-masted ship sailing to the right on waves and the outline of an island, near which is its old Portuguese name 'I. FORMOSA' — 'Beautiful Island'. Beneath the ship's hull are inscribed the year of discovery 1582 and the modern name of the island in Portuguese 'TAIWAN' and Chinese '台湾', which translates as 'Taiwan'.
  • Obverse
At the bottom near the rim is the country name in Portuguese 'REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA', which translates to 'Republic of Portugal'. The central part features a composition including the coat of arms of Portugal — a Spanish-style heraldic shield with seven castles and five small shields decorated with bezants in a cross pattern — a flowering branch, the inscription '200 ESC' — '200 escudos', and the date 1996.
