    In the central part is the head of an antelope, with 20 ostrich feathers between its horns. To its right is the numeral 5, and to its left the letter designation for the franc - 'FRS'. Along the arcs of the left and right edges of the coin are images of two fish facing opposite directions from each other. In the upper part, along the arc of the coin's edge, is the French text: 'COTE FRANÇAISE DES SOMALIS' - 'FRENCH SOMALILAND', below is a raised pattern of diamonds and dots.

    In the central part is the left-facing profile of Marianne – a young woman in a Phrygian cap, against a background of a flotilla of 4 ships. To the left and right along the edge is the French text: 'REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE', which translates to 'FRENCH REPUBLIC'. In the lower part, along the arc of the coin's edge, is the year of mintage, 1959.
