In the central part on the right are large numerals 50, below them a two-line inscription in English 'EURO / CENT' – translated as 'fifty euro cents'. To the right of the numerals is the engraver's mark of Luc Luycx 'LL'. In the central part on the left are the outlines of the eurozone countries. From them, six vertical parallel lines extend upwards and downwards, ending with 12 stars.
Obverse
To the right and left near the rim are 6 stars each, symbolizing the countries of the European Union. At the top, the state name in French 'MONACO' – 'Monaco'. At the bottom, the year of minting 2001. To the left of the date is the mintmark of the Paris Mint – a cornucopia. To the right is the personal mark of mintmaster Gérard Buquoy – a horseshoe. In the central part is an image of a mounted knight facing right with a raised sword and a shield divided lozenge-wise according to the coat of arms of the Grimaldi family, the ruling dynasty of Monaco.
