The central part features silhouettes of ships of the French Navy. Above them, within a stylized frame, is the inscription '50 EURO'. Along the upper edge arc is the series name 'Les Grands Navires Francais', which translates from French as 'Great Ships of France'. The lower part depicts a fragment of a ship's chain and the mint year '2015', flanked on the left by a cornucopia (the mark of the Paris Mint) and on the right by a pentagon – the mark of the Chief Engraver of the Paris Mint, Yves Sampo.
Obverse
Centered against a backdrop of a bridge and a city is the cruiser. Above the bridge are a left-facing portrait of Jean-Baptiste Colbert and his family coat of arms. Along the lower edge arc of the coin is the ship's name 'Le Colbert', named after the French statesman. On the left is the abbreviation 'RF' for 'République Française' (French Republic).
