Reverse
Along the rim on either side, the inscription in Spanish: "REYNA DE LAS ESPAÑAS" - "QUEEN OF THE SPANIARDS". The central part features the lesser coat of arms of the Kingdom of Spain - a cross, with two lions and two castles in its quarters. Below is the mint mark of Jubia: "J". The edge of the rim is decorated with raised denticles.
Obverse
In the upper part, following the curve of the coin's edge, the text in Spanish: "ISABEL II POR LA GRACIA DE DIOS Y LA CONST." - "ISABELLA II BY THE GRACE OF GOD AND THE CONSTITUTION". The central part features the right-facing profile of Queen Isabella II. To her left is the digit: "4", to her right the letter: "M". Below is the year of minting: "1840".
