In the central part, a stylized depiction of six birds symbolizing the member countries of the union. Below each bird is the name of the participating state in French: «BENIN», «NIGER», «COTE D'IVOIRE», «SENEGAL», «HAUTE VOLTA», «TOGO». Below that – «5000 FRANCS 1982». Along the edge of the coin is a relief pattern of triangles, around which runs the inscription in French «RENFORCEMENT DE LA SOLIDARITE ET DE LA COHESION DE L'UNION MONETAIRE» (Strengthening the solidarity and cohesion of the monetary union).
Obverse
In the central part is the emblem of the BCEAO - a sawfish, to the left of it are the dates of the beginning and the twentieth anniversary of the monetary union «1 NOVEMBER 1962 – 1 NOVEMBER 1982». Below is the engraver's mark «RJ» - Raymond Joly. Along the edge of the coin is a relief pattern of triangles, to the left and right of which runs the inscription in French «BANQUE CENTRALE DES ETATS DE L'AFRIQUE DE L'OUEST» (Central Bank of the West African States).
