(1935 Halle/Saale - 2016 Niebüll) "Gray and Blue". Original title 1974. This composition, created in 1974, consists of two vertically parallel stripes on a white-gray background. By limiting himself to straight, equally wide lines or stripes on monochrome backgrounds, Brandt belongs to the most well-known, radical, and austere painters of Concrete Art. From 1955 to 1961, Brandt studied at the University of Fine Arts Berlin under Ernst Schumacher. The encounter with young American painting, especially Barnett Newman, had a significant influence on his oeuvre, which he also directly experienced during a scholarship in New York in 1975/76. From 1982 to 2001, Brandt was a professor for textile design at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg. In 1995, he received the Fred Thiele Prize for painting. Brandt's works can be found in numerous German museums. Oil on canvas; verso signed and dated (1974), annotated and titled on an old label. 60 cm x 100 cm. Framed or studio frame.
