Art historian Viktor Neumann, curator of the Berlin exhibition space Between Bridges, has been announced as the next director of theBonner Kunstvereinin Bonn, Germany, according toArtReview. He fills the position vacated by Swedish curator Fatima Hellberg, whohad ledthe institution since 2019 beforeacceptingthe post of general director of MUMOK in Vienna earlier this year. Neumann will assume his new responsibilities on March 1, 2025.
The Berlin-born Neumann arrived at Between Bridges in 2022, organizing projects there including a solo exhibition of Karol Radziszewski and retrospectives of Ioana Nemeș and Juan Pablo Echeverri. He was a cocurator of the Fifth Kyiv Biennial in 2024, of the Romanian Pavilion at the Fifty-Ninth Venice Biennale in 2022, and of the 2019 Bergen Assembly. Neumann has curated projects and exhibitions for the Kitchen and the Whitney Museum of American Art, both in New York; Bildmuseet Umeå, Sweden; Kunstmuseum Bonn and Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, both in Germany; Gdańsk City Gallery, Poland; and the National Centre for Contemporary Arts, Yekaterinburg, Russia. He has published widely and taught internationally, most recently serving as guest professor for curatorial studies at Germany’s Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design.
“Neumann’s ongoing research into emancipatory traditions and contemporary body politics will inform a participatory process of inquiry at the Bonner Kunstverein into the questions of which bodies have access to what is considered public space and under what conditions, and in turn, what concepts of the public sphere might be imagined inside art spaces,” said museum board chair Anke Schierholz in a statement.
