The Art Newspaperon October 2 announced that Alison Cole would be stepping away from her role as editor in chief afterleadingthe publication for five and a half years. According toArt News, Cole is leaving to helm a newly created UK organization that will influence cultural policies in the country’s arts and creative industries. She will remain onThe Art Newspaper’s masthead as editor at large. “Alison took on the challenging task of leading the newspaper’s cultural strategy and its success as the medium of record for the art world,” said Inna Bazhenova, the paper’s publisher, in a statement.
“I look forward to our continued association with Alison as editor at large and wish her every success in her new endeavor.” Founded in 1990 as a monthly print and frequent digital publication,The Art Newspaperunder Cole’s leadership expanded its audience in the UK and in the US, with ad revenues and circulation reaching all-time highs. Prior to arriving at the publication, Cole, an arts consultant, historian, and journalist, had served as executive director of advocacy and communications at Arts Council England; as well, she was executive director of communications and publications at the Art Fund, and editor ofArt Quarterlymagazine. Cole’s departure came just days after Andrew Goldsteinexitedas editor in chief ofArtnet News, having spent seven years in the role. Goldstein cited the “frenetic pace” of the past few years as one of the reasons for his departure..
