Netflix Cofounder to Open Outdoor Art Park on Utah’s Powder Mountain

Reed Hastings, a cofounder and onetime CEO of streaming giant Netflix, has revealed plans to inaugurate an art park at thePowder Mountainski resort in Eden, Utah. Hastings, who purchased the resort in 2023, cited Storm King Art Center in New York’s Hudson Valley as an inspiration for his own park, which will occupy 12,000 acres and will be open to the public. The works will be owned by a nonprofit that Hastings is in the process of setting up; their placement is intended to connect visitors to the landscape.

“At Powder, we want every experience—from the ski resort to the residential community to the outdoor art museum—to be intentional, and the integration of art into the mountain is a manifestation of that consideration,” Hastings said in a statement. “We aim to transform Powder into a multi-season destination that blends recreation, art, and meaningful connection for our entire community.”

The project was conceived by Hastings and Powder Mountain chief creative officer Alex Zhang and is curated by Matthew Thompson, formerly a curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, with Diana Nawi, who is a curator of contemporary art at the LA institution. Among the artists commissioned to create works for the site are Nikita Gale, Raven Halfmoon, Arthur Jafa, EJ Hill, Jenny Holzer, Paul McCarthy, Gala Porras-Kim, and Davina Semo. Those contributing extant works include Land artist Nancy Holt (1938–2014) and James Turrell, whose light installation Ganzfeld Apani, created in 2011 for the Venice Biennale, will be situated in a trailside pavilion within walking distance from Powder Mountain’s main parking lot.

Two works have already been installed: Gerard & Kelly’s Relay (Powder Mountain), 2023, and Susan Philipsz’s We’ll All Go Together, 2007. Hill’s and Semo’s works are expected to be in place by the time the resort’s 2024–25 season begins. The art park is slated for completion in 2026.
