Dealmaker Brooke Lampley Leaves Sotheby’s for Gagosian

Sotheby’s global chairman and head of global fine art Brooke Lampley is departing the auction house for megagallery Gagosian, where she will serve as a senior director. According to a press release from Gagosian, Lampley will step into her new role “later this year.”

“After twenty years of auctions, I am excited to experience another side of the art world, and to learn from the very best,” Lampley said in a statement. “My love of art is what drives me, and I am looking forward to getting closer to artists and thinking deeply about the evolution of a body of work.”

Lampley arrived to Sotheby’s in 2018 from Christie’s, where she had led the house’s Impressionist and modern art team. In 2021, she was one of three staffers who initially split Sotheby’s global fine art chief duties after Amy Cappellazzo vacated the post. As global chairman and head of global fine art, Lampley is in charge of specialists in eleven different departments, among them contemporary, modern, old masters, Chinese, and Latin American art. As well, she oversees auctions, private sales, and online sales and in this capacity assists such billionaire buyers as Ken Griffin and Stephen Schwarzman. Among the collections she helped Sotheby’s secure during her tenure there are the Emily Fisher Landau estate in 2023—the sale of which set a record for a female collector at auction—and the Macklowe collection and a rare copy of the US Constitution, both in 2021.

“We are grateful to Brooke for her many contributions to the company over nearly seven years,” said Sotheby’s CEO Charles Stewart in a statement. “We wish her all the best and look forward to collaborating with her in her next endeavor.”
