National Endowment for the Arts Announces More Than $110 Million in Grants

TheNational Endowment for the Arts(NEA) on May 15revealedthat it will distribute more than $110 million in grants to more than eight hundred organizations across the fifty states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The recipients fall into three categories: Grants for Arts Projects, Our Town, and State and Regional Partnerships.

Among those receiving funding in the first category are the Desert Biennial in Palm Springs, California, in support of a large-scale sculptural work by Agnes Denes; New York’s Dia Art Foundation, for a Duane Linklater commission; and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, for a survey of work by Pakistani American artist Anila Quayyum Agha. Those awarded monies under the Our Town rubric include the Chilkoot Indian Association in Haines, Alaska, in support of community gatherings and co-created public art aimed at healing generational trauma in the Tlingit community; and Neomuralismos de Mexico in St. Paul, Minnesota, for a public art project featuringalebrijes, brightly hued fantastical creatures, often amalgams of different animals, that are a form of traditional Mexican folk art. Receiving funding in the State and Regional Partnership category are numerous state arts councils as well as organizations with a broader reach, including Arts Midwest, Mid Atlantic Arts, and the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies.

“These projects exemplify the creativity and care with which communities are telling their stories, creating connection, and responding to challenges and opportunities in their communities—all through the arts,” said NEA chair Maria Rosario Jackson in a statement. “So many aspects of our communities such as cultural vitality, health and well-being, infrastructure, and the economy are advanced and improved through investments in art and design and this funding at the local, state, and regional levels demonstrates the National Endowment for the Arts’ commitment to ensuring people across the country benefit.”
