The Andy Warhol Museum on October 17 unveiled plans for a $45 million expansion that would see the Pittsburgh institution build a new structure in the space currently occupied by its 58,000 square-foot parking lot. Featuring a 1,000-capacity concert venue on its ground floor, a 360-capacity event space on the fourth floor, with office space and a mezzanine occupying the floors in between, the new building would increase the museum’s footprint by more than 60 percent. Construction could begin as early as next spring, according to museum spokesperson Rick Armstrong, who told theAssociated Pressthat the timeline was “still flexible.”RelatedHELEN FRANKENTHALER FOUNDATION SUED FOR “DESTROYING” PAINTER’S LEGACYBMA CREATES PAID INTERNSHIPS HONORING VALERIE MAYNARD The project is part of the Warhol Museum’s “Pop District” initiative, which the institution’s website describes as a “multi-block public art initiative, a youth-focused, creative economy workforce program, flagship live event & performance venue.”Announced in 2022, the district is slated to occupy a half-dozen blocks surrounding the museum and will act as a cultural hub celebrating and continuing Warhol’s legacy. Projected to cost $60 million, the district is expected to take ten years to complete.
